VoIP and IP Telephony, Hosted PBX, Traditional PBX and IP PBX. What are the differences ?10/15/2014 DigitalRevolution changed the way we communicate. The ability to collect, manage and manipulate voice and audio data in the digital domain has fostered higher performance computing and anytime, anywhere communication.
Today such components of telephone industry as IP telephony, VoIP, PBX, IP PBX are used interchangeably by many people, but difference between these telephone systems is distinct. VoIP and IP Telephony IP telephony (Internet Protocol telephony) is a general term for the technologies that use the Internet Protocol's packet-switched connections to exchange voice, fax, and other forms of information that have traditionally been carried over the dedicated circuit-switched connections of the public switched telephone network (PSTN). VoIP is a subset of IP Telephony. IP Telephony, also commonly called Internet Telephony, is the area of communications that involves digital phone systems based on a number of IP (Internet) standards. It is a way of making a phone system digital in a way to take advantage of the Internet and of any hardware and applications attached to. The main aim of IP Telephony is to increase productivity, which suggests that the technology is better referenced in business environments. On the other hand, VoIP is simply a digital transport vehicle for phone calls. In its different flavors, it works towards offering cheap or free calls and to add more features to voice communications. To see it in a broader picture, think of IP Telephony as the overall concept and VoIP as a means of transmitting voice to implement this concept. PBX and IP PBX Traditional PBX or analogue phone systems exist as a physical exchange box on your company's premises. Here, a phone box is used that connects all the on-site phone lines (ISDN lines), the costs are usually higher due to installation, down time and maintenance and support. As traditional free virtual PBX systems tend to be more complex and bespoke it requires a certified engineer to fix any issues Even so, if cost is an issue, remember that hardware needs to be maintained and upgraded. Virtual PBX system hardware can quickly become obsolete in today’s digital climate. Many businesses with offices that are spread out around the country prefer the IP PBX platform because it treats all callers as if they are in the same office building. Consequently, there is considerable cost-savings to be enjoyed from this model. The IP PBX platform makes use of the Internet so it is a bit of a hybrid when it comes to telecommunications technology. Wireless Voice over IP (VoIP) is any technology that allows you to make phone calls using a Wi-Fi network and the Internet. Google Talk and Skype are most popular versions of wireless VoIP. A wireless VoIP phone uses Wi-Fi to send and receive voice data over the Internet. In fact, voice is converted into digital data, which is sent from the phone to a Wi-Fi router, then sent over the Internet to a server which routes the data to the other phone. VoIP phones are used to make or receive calls from VoIP phones, landlines and cell phones. In this article I will refer to history, requirements, benefits and drawbacks of Wireless VoIP or WVoIP, which is gaining huge popularity in telephone industry.
History WVoIP gained traction in 2004, when some hospitals and health-care facilities were attracted to this technology. It was considered to be an effective and affordable way of providing on-site, wifi-based mobile voice service to doctors, nurses and other personnel. This technology has also found use in office buildings, campuses, factories and other business locations that are easily covered by a wifi network. The advent of WiMAX, a long range microwave-based wireless technology based on the 802.16, extended the reach of VoIP, as it can provide wireless broadband coverage to an entire metropolitan area or large rural area, as WiMAX transmissions can span up to 75 kilometers. Requirements In order to use a wireless VoIP phone, you need a high-speed Internet connection and also a Wi-Fi router, though this is only necessary if you have a self-contained handset or a base that can only connect to your home network via Wi-Fi. There are some wireless VoIP phones that use a base which connects to your Internet modem either with a network cable or USB cable. There are also models that plug into the USB port on your computer. You should also choose a service provider that is capable of routing your VoIP calls to other phones. Benefits As regular VoIP services, WVoIP's biggest advantage is its cost-effectiveness. WVoIP adopters escape the high-priced calling plans and contract terms offered by many mobile carriers. International-call savings are particularly substantial. WVoIP is more flexible than conventional mobile-phone technology. Instead of being tied to a single mobile phone, users have a choice of making calls on a WVoIP handset, mobile/wifi hybrid phone, wireless-enabled laptop computer or PDA. When you make VoIP calls using wifi network you pay only the cost of your VoIP service, which is usually cheaper than the cost of cell phone service and may offer free unlimited international calling. Being wireless, you can use your phone anywhere you have access to Wi-Fi, without cords or wires. VoIP phones usually include additional features which aren't available on conventional phones including the ability to record phone calls in MP3 format. Drawbacks Though it's hard to beat WVoIP's cost advantages, the technology has disadvantages as well. The greatest barrier, which blocks widespread consumer and enterprise adoption is the limited coverage range currently provided by wifi networks. In fact, a WVoIP handset works well inside organization offices or campus wide wireless networks, coffee shops, hotel rooms or airport departure lounges located within wifi hotspots, but it isn't available when walking, driving or cycling along public streets. Another challenge facing WVoIP adopters is the QoS (quality of service) over wifi and mobile networks. Wifi hotspots can become overloaded when too many people use WVoIP or other bandwidth-intensive applications simultaneously. Security is also a major concern, as with transmissions going over the airwaves instead of cables and thus subject to easier interception. Any Wi-Fi network that carries VoIP traffic must be secured, and this traffic should be protected by authentication and encryption. I hope my article helped you deepen your awareness of WvoIP technology and you will make the best use of it. VoIP technology is considered to be a great revolution in the field of telecommunications.
